Day 7: Embrace Technology

Yesterday I wrote about my desire for Little C to learn about and respect the past.

However, we can’t expect to make progress if we never try anything new. I can’t think of another industry that has changed so rapidly over the last hundred years as agriculture.

From the first hybrid corn to today’s pest-resistant and herbicide-tolerant varieties, from two-cylinder tractors to auto-steer four-wheel drive machines, technology is the common thread. It’s something that needs to be tested, sure, but also embraced when the benefits are clear. If we are to feed 9 billion people in the world by 2050, we need to be more efficient and productive than ever.

Little C, this is where you have an advantage. You’ll grow up familiar with technology that your parents and grandparents have to learn as adults. Of course, things will continue to evolve, but already your generation has a leg up on mine.

You’re not even two years old and you can already turn on my phone and swipe through the pictures looking for Daddy.

This was taken when she was only 11 months old. She actually was swiping through my photo album.

I can’t wait to see what you’ll have the opportunity to experience in the future of agriculture.

Little C, my little farm girl, I want you to embrace technology. Test it, try it, make sure it has a clear benefit, but don’t be afraid of it.

Need to catch up?
